Before Happy Grasshopper Came To The Rescue
Justin Willcut was not prepared for what happened when he sent his first Happy Grasshopper message in early 2018.
After all, he’d tried following up with his database via email before and the results were less than impressive.
“I got two responses over the course of several months,” said Justin, a real estate agent with Keller Williams in Helena, Montana. “And one of them didn’t even lead anywhere!”
Justin wasn’t necessarily surprised by the lack of engagement with his messages. They were pretty generic – market updates, newsletters, basically the same things every other agent was sending out.
“I just struggled in thinking the messages were kind of lame,” he said. “It was stuff even I wouldn’t have wanted to read.”
Because Justin was well aware of the importance of staying in touch with his database, he thought about creating his own emails, but with writing “not being one of my strengths,” he quickly dismissed that idea. He knew there had to be a better way.
And then, there it was. During a BOLD training, Justin heard about Happy Grasshopper and he was intrigued. He loved the idea of having custom content created just for him, in his voice, that his database would actually want to read.
Which brings us to what happened on the day Justin’s first message went out…

“I got four or five responses immediately,” he said. “One of my old leads called me that day and said he was ready to look at houses, and now we’re in the process of finding a new home for him and his family.”
Another old lead reached out to get together for coffee, and even people who weren’t interested in buying or selling anytime soon still sent him messages saying they were glad to hear from him. In other words, the complete opposite of what happened with his previous attempts to connect with his database.
“It actually caught me off guard,” Justin said. “This is way better than cold calling!”
In addition to loving the content of the messages, Justin also appreciates how user-friendly the automated system is, especially because the one he’d used before would sometimes deactivate his messaging for no apparent reason. Plus, whenever he needs help, someone from support is always there to answer his questions.
“I’m the type of person who likes to know and understand what’s going on,” he said. “I really appreciate all the guidance and encouragement I’ve gotten from my coach.”
