How to Use Tags and Audiences In  Happy Grasshopper

Contact Segmentation Guide

What Are Tags?

Tags are flexible, custom labels you can assign to contacts to help organize and filter them. Unlike audiences (which are broad categories like Leads, Sphere, or Past Clients), tags can represent anything you want:

  • Open House
  • First Time Buyers
  • Investor
  • Referral
  • VIP
  • Pet Owner

You can assign multiple tags to a single contact and use them to filter contacts, target messages, and group people by behavior, interests, or engagement.

How to Create & Apply Tags

To Create a New Tag

Go to the Tags section under Management, click Add Tag, name your tag  and save.

To Apply Tags to a Contact

Open a contact’s profile and add tags directly, or apply tags in bulk from the All Contacts list. You can also automate adding tags.

How to Filter by Tags

When viewing All Contacts, use the filter menu to sort by one or more tags. This is great for sending messages to specific groups or checking the size of any tagged segment.

Tags vs. Audiences — What’s the Difference?

  • Tags
  • Unlimited per contact
  • Flexible, detailed categorization
  • "Open House”, “Investorr”, “Referral”
  • Audiences
  • Only one per contact
  • High Level categorization
  • Leads, Sphere, Past Clients

Think of audiences like umbrellas, and tags as the specific descriptors underneath.

Tips for Tag Management

  • Keep it clean: Archive old tags you’re not using anymore
  • Be consistent: Use standardized naming
  • Use automation: Tags can be applied automatically through campaigns, integrations, or custom forms.
